Exciting School Project!

Pupils at Trelai Primary School in Caerau, Cardiff prepared and took part in the film animation "Hillfort - the Lost World of Ely". The film was shown in January 2005 at the school in the presence of invited guests including ourselves and among others the Lord Mayor Ms Jacqui Gasson and the Lady Mayoress. Ms Gasson commented on how impressed she was and said that she had been unaware of such a rich history on the doorstep.

The film lasted about 6 minutes and the children then gave a verbal presentation - each saying a few words. The children had researched and written their own material and had also built a model of the hill fort and placed models of St Mary's Church and the castle ringwork together with trees and other features upon it. They were also involved with the artwork, acting, costumes and make-up.

The film and commentary showed how the hillfort looked in the Iron Age and how the Silures dressed. It showed the impact of the Roman occupation of the area. The section of the film dealing with St. Mary's was interesting. The film succeeded in showing the importance of the hill fort and church to the local communities throughout the ages.

All in all the project was very worthwhile and the children are lucky to have had the chance to be involved.

Well done Trelai Primary School.
